Privacy Policy
Effective date: 18 September 2026
Nim ("the app", "we") is a flashcard app for language learning. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your data. Nim is built to be private by design: there are no accounts, and we keep none of your content on infrastructure we control.
Summary
- No account required. The app works fully without one. An optional account exists solely to connect Nim's browser tools to your phone (see "Optional account" below).
- No analytics, no tracking, no advertising. We do not collect usage statistics or share data with advertisers or data brokers.
- Your decks and cards live on your device and in your own private iCloud (if your device is signed into iCloud) — never on servers we operate.
- The only data that ever leaves your device to us is text you choose to turn into a flashcard (and the text of cards you ask to hear spoken), relayed to an AI provider to build the card — plus a random device identifier used only for rate limiting.
What the app accesses
Photos / screenshots
When you create a card from a screenshot, the image is read on your device using Apple's on-device text recognition (Vision). The image itself is not uploaded. Nim only works with the text recognized from it.
Text sent for AI processing
When you use cloud AI features, the recognized text (not the image) is sent through a small relay server we operate (Cloudflare Workers) to the AI provider, to:
- clean up and structure the recognized text,
- generate a translation, notes, and an example sentence for the word or phrase you select, and
- generate natural-voice audio for a card, if you use that feature.
Our relay forwards your text and stores none of it — no content is logged or retained. The AI provider that receives the text is OpenRouter (openrouter.ai), which routes requests to the underlying model provider (for example Google or Anthropic); see their privacy policies for how they handle request data.
If you use the free on-device mode (Apple's on-device models), no text leaves your device for AI processing.
Device identifier for rate limiting
AI requests include a random identifier generated on first launch. It is not derived from your identity or hardware, is not linked to you, and is used solely to enforce fair daily usage limits. Our relay keeps per-day request counts for at most a day; they are deleted automatically.
Optional account
You can sign in with Sign in with Apple or an email code (we email you a 6-digit code; there are no passwords). You never have to: everything described above works signed out. If you do sign in, the account is used for exactly two things:
- Capture inbox. A card you save in a Nim browser tool (for example Nim for Chrome) is held on our server only until your phone fetches it, then marked delivered. It contains the card's text (the word, its translation, notes, and the sentence it came from) and, when relevant, a reference to where it came from (such as a video ID and timestamp).
- Known-words list. Your phone sends a list of the words on your cards with a rough "how well you know it" level (four levels), per language, so the browser tools can highlight words you already know. It contains no sentences, notes, or study history, and you can wipe it at any time by signing out.
What we store for an account: your email address or Apple identifier, sign-in sessions, the inbox and known-words data above, and your plan (free or Pro). We do not link the account to analytics, advertising, or any third party. Deleting the account deletes all of it.
Dictionary lookups (optional)
If you use the dictionary integration, the word you look up is handed to the dictionary app or website via a link. This only happens when you tap to look a card up.
iCloud sync
If your device is signed into iCloud, your decks, cards, study progress, and a few preferences (like your streak) sync through Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) to your private iCloud database. This is storage that belongs to your Apple ID:
- We cannot read it, access it, or share it — only your signed-in devices can.
- It is what makes your cards appear on a new iPhone and survive deleting the app.
- It counts against your iCloud storage (card text is tiny).
- If you are not signed into iCloud, the app simply stores everything locally.
See Apple's iCloud privacy policy for how Apple handles iCloud data.
Where your data is stored
- On your device, in the app's local database.
- In your private iCloud, if your device is signed into iCloud (see above).
- Nothing you write in Nim — decks, cards, notes, progress — is stored on servers we control, except the two transient things an optional account carries (cards in transit from your browser, and the known-words list).
Purchases
Subscriptions and purchases are processed by Apple. We never see your payment details.
Deleting your data
- Deleting cards or decks in the app removes them everywhere, including from your iCloud.
- Deleting the app removes all data stored locally on that device. A copy may remain in your private iCloud (so a reinstall can restore your cards); to remove that too, delete your decks in the app first, or remove the app's data in iOS Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage.
- If you have an account: signing out removes the known-words list; to delete the account and everything attached to it, email us (below) — we delete it within a few days.
Children's privacy
Nim does not knowingly collect personal information from children and requires no personal information to use.
